Toronto Public Library Children’s Services

As a designer at the Toronto Public Library, my role was to take the pre-existing Children’s Services Brand Guidelines and apply them across a range of applications. Based on the main guidelines, I designed the Staff Brand Book to show the essence of the identity, giving staff a glimpse into the look and feel of new promotional materials. The concept of self-discovery and fun is demonstrated by details such as illustrated musical notes, and icons marching on wayfinding dots. Brand colors and devices are emphasized, along with ideas for how staff can incorporate the brand into their daily jobs.

The North York Central Library required an engaging set of decals for the newly renovated Children’s Department. The design needed to showcase the new children’s brand and also mesh well with the established transportation theme. For the main entrance, I created a hot air balloon to reflect this theme. The globe signifies a welcome to all cultures, while the GoDot icons portray positive energy and movement. The elements themselves clearly indicate this is a space for children, without the actual words “Children’s Department.” Inspired by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway, I designed a set of circle decals that match this iconic subway map. Teens and adults identify the map as the subway, while young children see an intersection of colorful dots.

The tote bag is geared specifically for Children’s staff. I chose a variety of icons to reflect the plethora of services staff brings to life at the library including science, reading, art, music, and generation of ideas. Additionally, I created a new icon (upper left) as a focal point to highlight making connections – a key component in the daily role of staff. The bag is intended as a tool to carry books, resources, stickers, etc. as staff aid children in self-discovery at the library.
